Stewardship and Land Management

Protecting land is just the first step. After the land is conserved, we nurture and enhance open space and wildlife habitat for generations to come. Westchester Land Trust’s preserves are actively managed by our dedicated stewardship team that works year round to:

• Mark, monitor, and maintain preserve boundaries
• Conduct surveys of plants and wildlife
• Design, build, and maintain trail systems, including boardwalks and bog bridges
• Construct and maintain fences, parking areas, and kiosks
• Restore habitat, including removing invasive species and planting native trees and shrubs, grasses and ferns, and wildflowers

Many of our preserves are open to the public and welcome visitors to walk, hike, and study, and appreciate nature. Others are closed, to protect sensitive ecosystems or while we prepare a property for community access.
